Eight women accuse HIV-positive man of unprotected sex

Two more women have come forward and accused a Calgary man of having unprotected sex with them and not advising them he is HIV positive, bring his total alleged victims to eight.

Crown prosecutor Janice Walsh said Thursday that the latest complainants against J.M. are from Lethbridge.

J.M. is facing eight counts of aggravated sexual assault against the women, including four from Calgary and one each from Airdrie and Innisfail.

He is also charged with voyeurism for allegedly taking pictures of one of the Calgary women having a shower at her home without her permission. As well, he faces three counts of breaching bail conditions.

Both new complainants, Walsh said, gave statements to Lethbridge Police after reading about the case in the media. Their allegations are between March 2012 and July 2012.

“They were part of relationships, they learned through the media about other complainants and came forward,” Walsh said. “All of the charges are now consolidated on to one new information so they would be tried together.”

J.M. appearance in provincial court on Thursday had been set for continuation of his bail hearing, but defence lawyer Andrea Urquhart was granted an adjournment by Judge John Bascom to review the disclosure of the new charges she had just received from the Crown.

He will be back in court on Monday to set a date to resume the bail hearing.

One of the complainants against J.M. dates back to late 2001. Five of the alleged offences are from last year and the other two are from earlier this year.

J.M. was first charged last February in relation to two of the complainants from late last year, Since then, the others have come contacted police as a result of the publicity surrounding the case.

He was initially released on bail, but rearrested when other complainants came forward.

Walsh could not say exactly when J.M. was diagnosed as HIV positive, only that it was before the dates of the earliest allegations.  One of the more recent complainants had first connected with J.M. via an Internet dating service.
