Man accused of hiding daughter in Iraq has volatile past: court documents

The Calgary couple at the centre of an international kidnapping case in which the father is accused of hiding their daughter in Iraq had a volatile breakup seven years ago.

[The accused] is charged with abducting his daughter from the care of her mother, Zainab Mahdi, after returning from a trip to the Middle East without the girl.

Court documents show the couple had a nasty breakup in 2012, in which Mahdi accused him of abusing her and moved into a woman’s shelter.

According to testimony in support of an emergency protection order issued on July 16, 2012, Mahdi told police she feared her husband would kill her.
