Roulston Urquhart Criminal Defence Week in Review: Week of May 3rd-6th

Tonii Roulston appeared in the Court of Queen’s Bench before Chief Justice Wittmann to speak to sentencing. The client, originally charged with 19 offences stemming from luring and child pornography, plead guilty to 2 counts while the remaining 17 charges were withdrawn.

Andrea Urquhart appeared in Provincial Court to resolve a matter originally scheduled for a three day trial for 4 counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, including trafficking fentanyl and heroin. The client pled guilty to simple possession. She negotiated the release of two clients. One client was on release for a trafficking offence, possession of stolen property worth over $5,000, and two breaches of release conditions before re-offending. The other was taken into custody after breaching release conditions attached to numerous charges including luring, sexual assault, and bestiality.

Robin McIntyre had two charges withdrawn on the day of trial. After speaking to the crown about the client’s circumstances, the client’s failure to appear in court offence was withdrawn. Another of Ms McIntyre’s clients had a trial scheduled for a domestic assault but charges were stayed by the Prosecutor. Ms McIntyre attended Lethbridge and Taber provincial court to discuss release for several of her in-custody clients.

Alin Mayer attended Pincher Creek Provincial Court on a trial for violent offences including assault causing bodily harm and choking. Pleas were entered to simple assault and the client was sentenced to probation and a fine. Ms Mayer also attended Cochrane Provincial Court on breach charges stemming from release on arson offences. The client plead guilty and received a low fine. Ms Mayer made an appearance in Criminal Arraignment Court to schedule a trial for an accused charged with trafficking.
